When Prayer Feels Hard: How to Seek God Even When You Don't Have Words

Have you ever sat down to pray and found… nothing? No words. No feelings. Just silence and a vague sense that you're doing it wrong?

You're not alone — and you're not failing.

Prayer is one of the most intimate parts of the Christian life, and yet it's also one of the places where many believers quietly struggle. We know we should pray. We want to feel connected to God. But some seasons make prayer feel like shouting into an empty room.

What the Bible Says About Wordless Prayer

Romans 8:26 offers one of the most comforting truths in all of Scripture: "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

Read that again. The Spirit intercedes for you — even when you have no words. Prayer was never meant to be a performance. It was never meant to be polished or articulate or emotionally charged. It's simply turning toward God, even when you feel empty.

Why Prayer Gets Hard

There are seasons when prayer dries up — and they're usually the seasons when we need it most. Grief. Burnout. Spiritual dryness. Unanswered prayers that have left us quietly disappointed. In those moments, the enemy whispers that our silence means distance. That God has moved on. That we've fallen too far behind to catch up.

None of that is true.

Simple Ways to Pray When You Have No Words

  • Pray the Psalms. The Psalms are full of raw, honest, sometimes desperate prayers. When you can't find your own words, borrow David's. Psalm 23, Psalm 46, Psalm 139 — let them be your prayer.
  • Sit in silence. Sometimes prayer is simply being still and acknowledging that God is present. You don't have to fill the silence with words.
  • Pray one sentence. "God, I need you." "Help me." "I don't understand, but I trust you." One honest sentence is a complete prayer.
  • Journal your prayers. Writing can unlock what speaking can't. Let your pen find the words your mouth can't form.

A Prayer for When You're Struggling to Pray

Lord, I don't have the words today. I'm tired and I don't know what to ask for. But I'm here — and I know You see me. Intercede for me where I fall short. Draw me close even when I can't find my way to You. Amen.
