God Is With You in the Hard Seasons: Finding His Presence When Life Feels Dark

There are seasons of life that don't make sense.

Seasons where you prayed and the answer was no. Where you did everything right and things still fell apart. Where the silence of God feels louder than anything else.

If you're in one of those seasons right now, this is for you.

The Lie We Believe in the Dark

When life gets hard, our instinct is to assume that God has stepped back. That His silence means absence. That the difficulty means we've done something wrong, or that He's forgotten us, or that our faith simply isn't strong enough.

But Scripture tells a different story.

Isaiah 43:2 says: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."

Notice what God doesn't say. He doesn't say if you face hard things. He says when. Difficulty is not a sign of God's absence — it's the very place where His presence is promised.

God in the Valley

Psalm 23:4 — one of the most beloved passages in all of Scripture — doesn't promise a life without valleys. It promises a God who walks through them with us: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me."

The valley is not the end of the story. It's the middle. And in the middle, God is present.

How to Find God When He Feels Far

  • Go back to what you know. When you can't feel God, anchor yourself to what you know to be true. He is faithful. He has been faithful before. He will be faithful again.
  • Tell Him how you feel. God is not fragile. He can handle your honesty. The Psalms are full of writers who told God exactly how dark things felt — and found Him there.
  • Look for small graces. In hard seasons, God's presence often shows up in small things — a kind word, an unexpected provision, a moment of unexpected peace. Train your eyes to see them.
  • Stay in community. Hard seasons are not meant to be walked alone. Let someone in. Let someone pray with you and for you.

A Word for the Weary

If you're exhausted and wondering if God sees you — He does. If you're questioning whether your faith is strong enough to survive this season — it doesn't have to be. His strength is made perfect in your weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

You are not forgotten. You are not alone. And this season is not the end of your story.
